Getting Closer to Nature Could Combat Rise in Antidepressants

Evidence points to a rise in the number of antidepressants being prescribed by mental health professionals. While medication can be a helpful aid in reducing depression’s life-altering effects, it’s not the only—or necessarily even the best—solution for you.

 

Research suggests that heading outdoors can help fight one of depression’s greatest tools: ruminating on your emotional pain. Compared to walking in an urban area, walking in nature can greater reduce some cognitive signs of mental illness.

 

There’s hope to be found  in the link between experiencing nature and decreasing depressed feelings: the more researchers learn about depression, the more tools you have at your disposal to start feeling better your way.
